Easily download YouTube videos

Ever wanted to save a video you saw on YouTube? Maybe streaming it was jittery, or you were afraid it would fall victim to paranoid DMCA requests, or you just plain liked it and wanted a copy for yourself. In all cases, the best tool I’ve found is pwnYouTube, which now goes by Deturl.com.

Here’s how it works. If you are watching a YouTube video directly on the YouTube site, just append “pwn” to the url after the “www.” So if I wanted to download the now-famous JK Wedding Entrance Dance video, the original URL…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-94JhLEiN0

becomes…

http://www.pwnyoutube.com/watch?v=4-94JhLEiN0

Follow that link for yourself to see it in action.

The site can also automatically extract videos from a non-YouTube site. Just append deturl.com in front of any URL to download the YouTube video. Here’s an example from Frank’s blog. First here’s the link for a post with an embedded video…

http://frankkoehl.com/2009/07/get-inspired-jk-wedding-entrance

and here’s the URL to automatically extract the video on this page…

http://deturl.com/frankkoehl.com/2009/07/get-inspired-jk-wedding-entrance

See how we just tacked "deturl.com/" onto the front? You can do with any site. Cool, huh?
